The 1960s
Whatever Happened To...?

Whatever happened to...?
Daily life was full of things that we don't see much anymore. Here are just a few of them....

----------
the milkman
A familiar sight in the 1960s was the milkman, driving around in his Divco truck, delivering fresh dairy products right to your front door. Some local dairies still have home delivery, but their numbers are dwindling.

curlers
Women thought nothing of going to the supermarket with curlers in their hair. Imagine doing that now!

trading stamps
Most supermarkets and gas stations gave out S&H Green Stamps, which could be redeemed for merchandise at the S&H Redemption Center. You stuck the stamps in your savers book, and when you had enough, you took them down to the redemption center and picked out that nifty item you saw in the S&H catalog. When I was growing up, the nearest redemption center was in the back of the Wieboldt's department store.

A&P Supermarkets gave out Plaid Stamps, while other stores gave out Top Value and King Korn stamps.

TV tube-testing machines

Before solid-state technology was introduced, people filled paper bags with TV vacuum tubes and took a trip to the local drug store to use the self-service tube-testing machine.

side vents
Whatever happened to those little triangle-shaped vent windows on the driver and passenger sides of cars?

-- The 1966 Buick Riviera was the first car designed without side "vent" windows. The Pontiac Firebird and Chevy Camaro lost their side vent windows in 1968. Most cars, however, kept their side vents until the 1970s when automakers, in their efforts to make cars more economical, removed them because they weren't aerodynamic.

icicle tinsel
Remember when our Christmas trees were loaded with gobs of silver icicle tinsel and those really big colored lights?

Which method was better? Laying the icicle strands on the branches one by one, or throwing it on by the handful?

Don't forget the color wheel for your aluminum Christmas tree!
