----- "home" shopping

So you think Home Shopping is strictly a modern convenience, do you? Well, we had home shopping in the 1970s, too! It was called ordering from a catalog! :-)

Another form of home shopping in the 1970s: Tupperware, Mary Kay and Sarah Coventry parties. (well, they were demonstrated in someone's home!)

Although they never disappeared completely, most stores and gas stations stopped giving out trading stamps in the 1970s because of the poor economy.

hot air balloons
Sales of hot air balloons doubled every year from 1971 to 1977. When the Windy City Balloon Port opened near my home in 1974, it wasn't unusual to see 20 balloons a day in the summer. If you were really into it, we called you a balloonatic.

*Dialing 911 in an emergency was proposed in 1967 and was first put into operation in 1968. As convenient as it was, a 1974 study showed that most people were still reluctant to use it. They were afraid their emergencies weren't "urgent" enough.

*Many young people joined cults in the 1970s. These religious groups provided a sense of belonging that was very powerful. Concerned parents "kidnapped" their children from the cults and hired professionals to de-program them.

environmental issues received
attention in the 1970s

*Woodsy Owl said, "Give a hoot, don't pollute!"

*Americans discovered the benefits of solar power and recycling

*In 1970 the nation celebrated its first Earth Day, which was known as the First National Environmental Teach-In

relationships
*Gays & lesbians began coming out of the closet

*Between 1970 and 1977, the number of unmarried couples living together nearly doubled. While this was a huge increase, it still accounted for less than one percent of all American households.

*Young people were finding partners at singles bars, singles clubs and through computer dating services.

*The grooviest married couples were swingers. At wife-swapping parties, your bed partner for the night was determined by dumping everyone's car keys into a large bowl and drawing them at random.

*Before AIDS, herpes was the biggest health threat facing sexually-active couples. There was (and still is) no cure for this disease. Like they say, "The only difference between love and herpes is that herpes lasts forever."

drug use
The drug use that started in the 1960s became a real issue in the 1970s. Quaaludes, heroin, speed and Angel Dust (a mixture of animal tranquilizer and heroin) were the hot new drugs. The use of cocaine in trendy nightspots made it the "glamour drug." Marijuana use filtered down to high school students and was a source of humor for comedians like Cheech & Chong.

Heimlich Maneuver

*The Heimlich Maneuver was introduced in 1974. This revolutionary technique clears the airways of a choking person by applying upward pressure on the diaphragm. It was developed by Dr. Henry Heimlich and was immediately endorsed by the American Red Cross.

*Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) was first taught to medical personnel in 1960, and was formally adopted by the American Heart Association in 1963. The use of CPR in emergencies became common during the 1970s.

at school

Change was in the air for students in the 1970s.

goodbye Dick & Jane
The Dick & Jane readers were first used in 1931, and were last used during the 1969-70 school year. In the 1970s our new reading books were bright, colorful and modern. They also showed characters who were more ethnically and economically diverse.

no more dress codes
Throughout the 1960s, school dress codes were strictly enforced. Now it was the 1970s....casual clothing was becoming more acceptable, and dress codes were relaxed and ultimately banished altogether.

new ideas
Times were changing, and many schools were trying new ideas. At the grade school level, these included team teaching, unstructured open classrooms and modular cubbies in place of traditional desks. High schools experimented with open campus, student lounges and outdoor student smoking areas.

-----Title IX
Title IX prohibited gender discrimination in public schools. It was signed into law by President Nixon in 1972 and was fully implemented by 1978.

All areas of school life were affected:
*Girls were given equal opportunity to participate in sports.
*Students could not be prevented from taking a class because of gender. Boys could take cooking and sewing classes, and girls could take shop classes. Any classes with gender-specific names (like Boys P.E.) had to change their names.
*Colleges could not reject applicants because of marital status or gender, and high schools could not expel students because of pregnancy.

Title IX Overview
School Integration In Boston
School Busing 25 Years Later

forced busing
Many cities tried to balance the racial mix and enforce desegregation by busing students to schools far away from home. This did not go over very well and resulted in many riots, especially in Boston.

swing choir
In the early 1970s, the swing choir brought the sounds of contemporary music to our high schools. This select group of students performed rock and show tunes with choreography, and was usually accompanied by piano, bass and drums. In most schools, the swing choir was an extra-curricular activity, and membership was determined by audition. In my high school, the swing choir performed music from Jesus Christ Superstar, The Wiz and A Chorus Line, plus music by the Doobie Brothers and the Manhattan Transfer.
